We understand the concept of being positive and the benefits that positivity can have on our life; however, not every one of us can harness positivity easily. Luckily, positivity can be practiced. But just like many other things in life - unless you make a decision to pursue it, you would never get it. It is time to do up a Positivity Plan and fill it with positive affirmation activities, so you can begin to re-wire your brain in a positive way.
Being honest about what you would like to do and what you could actually achieve is much more important than having some lofty ideas in your Positivity Plan So it is important to consider the following when building your positive affirmation activity list:
- Genuine thoughts are a must
When searching for tasks that will trigger your positive emotions, ask yourself "why is this action creating positivity for me?". Will it calm your mind? Will it make you healthier? The clearer that you can articulate about your choices, the more likely you will be successful in implementing the list.
- Simple tasks are the best
We have the tendency to over complicate things. Keep your list simple so it is achievable. For example, what do you do if you enjoy gardening, but don't have time or means to grow a garden? Perhaps buying a bunch of pretty flowers from a local supermarket once a week is your answer.
- Be flexible
What triggers your positive emotions can change over time. So keep your positive affirmation activity list flexible and amend it accordingly to keep it relevant and fresh.
- Look after both your mind and your physical being
You will have to work extra hard to stay positive if you are in pain physically. There is enough research data out there demonstrating the benefits that physical exercises can bring. There are also plenty of resources available providing affordable if not free tips about physical exercises. So don't neglect your physical being and do something positive about it.
Build your list of positivity affirmation activities
- Begin with gratitude
Begin grateful is a powerful things; such a mindset immediately sets you apart from majority of people who tend to whinge and complain about life.
So start your day with 3 things that you are grateful about. Genuine gratitude works the best; things that you are grateful about do not even have to be larger than life.
For example, I am currently EXTREMELY grateful that my neighbour's dog is not barking! The temporary quietness has given me a chance to complete this post. I am indeed very grateful.
- Compliments never fail
Learn to look for the good in people. Plus it makes you popular if you do it right. So drop your cynicism and criticism, compliment at least 3 people at work everyday and 3 more from your personal circle.
- Be amazed
Having a positive attitude means we are willing to appreciate the world around us and be amazed by it. So take the time to observe what is happening around you.
Could it be the vivid colour of the rose in your garden that amazes you? What about the smile on your neighbour's face that makes you realise that the society is less cynical than what you previously believed? Perhaps it is that interesting tattoo on a young girl's arm from the local cafe that amazes you? You may not want a tattoo of your own, but you can still be amazed by the artistry.
Don't over think it, just be amazed.
- Love thyself
Do something you like every day. May it be small or big, it does not matter. The point is to make yourself happy. Simple acts such as choosing to wear your favourite red top to work or visiting a bookshop at your lunch break because you love reading can induce some happy emotions. Happy emotions are positive emotions that we should always create more.
- It's a brand new day
Let's try something new every day. We are so busy with our life and admit it, most of us are also creature of habits - a combination that stifles our sense of adventure. And having that sense of adventure stimulates our mind.
So make sure you deliberately choose to do something new each day. From trying a mild chilli dish for a non-chilli eater to opening the door with the left hand for a right handed person, take your pick, because choices are plenty. Don't be afraid to try something new. Instead, grow your sense of adventure everyday.
- Your mind needs a body
It is hard to have a happy mind when your body is in pain. So let's not forget about doing something good for your physical being.
Many of us struggle with the notion of exercise and worse still, often we mask our lack of desire to exercise with the "I am busy" excuse. But guess what, our busy schedule will never change. If it is not work, it will be family. If it is not family, it will be friends. So being busy is a fact of life and let's find a way around it. Here is an example.
Before I started my own company, I used to work in a project management role. My chiropractor used to threaten me repeatedly about sending a notice to my employer so I would get break from computer work.
My darling chiropractor thought it was my boss who stopped me from taking some exercise at work. I did not have the heart to tell him it was me who was not motivated. You give me a computer and that is it, I am glue to it until it is time to go home. So for me to take some much needed break at work, I needed collective persuasion. Doing it by myself was never going to happen.
I eventually came up with an idea for exercise at work and I called it a "relay game". The idea is simple. Before you get up and take a 5 min break from your crazy schedule, let one of your co-worker know that "You are next. When I am back, it is your turn to take a short break". And the game goes on.
The aim of this "relay game" is to create a ripple effect that involves the rest of the team and hopefully the collective power will break the workaholic culture and individual procrastination and achieve a better well-being balance at work collectively.
